What is Stainless Steel?

Stainless Steel is an iron alloy with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content, which forms a passive layer that protects it from corrosion and oxidation. Various grades contain additional elements like nickel, molybdenum, manganese, and nitrogen to enhance specific properties such as formability, strength, or corrosion resistance.

The main categories of stainless steel include:

  • Austenitic (e.g., 304, 316) – Non-magnetic, excellent corrosion resistance
  • Ferritic (e.g., 430) – Magnetic, good resistance and formability
  • Martensitic (e.g., 410, 420) – High hardness, moderate corrosion resistance
  • Duplex (e.g., 2205) – High strength and chloride resistance
  • Precipitation-Hardening (e.g., 17-4 PH) – High strength and corrosion resistance

What grade of stainless steel is best for general-purpose use?
Grade 304 is the most commonly used and suitable for general corrosion-resistant applications.
Is stainless steel magnetic?
Austenitic grades (e.g., 304, 316) are generally non-magnetic, while ferritic and martensitic grades (e.g., 410, 430) can be magnetic.
How do I choose between 304 and 316 stainless steel?
Choose 316 when enhanced corrosion resistance is needed—especially in marine or acidic environments.
Can stainless steel rust?
It resists rusting under normal conditions, but exposure to harsh chemicals, saltwater, or improper cleaning can still cause corrosion over time.
